Detailed description of Virginia National Golf Club, CLOSED 2012

Virginia National Golf Club is a Public 18 hole golf course located in Bluemont, Virginia.

Virginia National golf course first opened in 1999. The course was designed by Jerry Matthews.

Virginia National features championship tees, undulating fairways that ebb and flow like the river they mirror, the relaxing sounds of natural waterfalls, and breathtaking views from 100-foot vertical mountainside tee boxes. Century old sycamores and natural stands of weeping willows envelope the strategically placed greens creating an unforgettable golfing experience.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees, the course plays to 6,653 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 4,980 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 9, a par-5 that plays to 574 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 4, a par-3 that plays to 149 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 5, a 413 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Virginia National Golf Club is # 14, a 168 yard par-3.

Virginia National Golf Club at the Battleground of Cool Spring is one of northern Virginia's crown jewels. The course is set between the scenic Shenandoah River and Blue Ridge

In 1799, Thomas Parker built a house that he named "The Retreat" which later became the home of his grandson, Judge Richard E. Parker ("Hanging Judge Parker"), who presided over the trial of John Brown in 1859. The original house still stands overlooking the 18th green.

In 1864, advancing Union troops, under the command of General George Crook, were intercepted by a Confederate force sent by General John C. Breckenridge. The two armies met at Cool Spring. Fighting forced the Union troops across the river at the ford on The Retreat farm, where many drowned. The Battle of Cool Spring is remembered as the only Civil War battle fought in Clarke County, Virginia, and one remembered every day by the golfers who visit Virginia National.

The course closed in 2012 ___________

Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia controls the property. It's now a combination Civil War and University site.

This is an update of the ranking I left in September 2010 for play may during August 2010.

I played this course about about five months ago and the conditions had improved immensely from my experience with rhe course a few months earlier and posted last September. The improvement was not a surprise in that the staff was working a very specific plan the last time I was here, but to see results that quickly was impressive. Many of the distressed greens were 75% back, and most of greens are good. If the maintenance program they are following is maintained, this course will be 5 star by late spring.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Ranks with the best in this price level

Course conditions, tees & greens especially, are terrible. This course once had some of the best greens in northern VA, now they are dead! Tees are mostly dirt. The course changed ownership, went bankrupt, and is now run by the finance company. Davis Love Golf manages the place, AND SHOULD BE ASHAMED! The guy who owned the course a few years back kept it in perfect shape and obviously cared a great deal. He would be sad to see what happened to his course through a series of non-caring owners and poor management. The layout is still beautiful. Plays along the river, and up onto the adjoining mountain. No houses to be seen, except for those miles in the distance from one elevated mountain tee. The course is for sale - I hope that it is saved. It's a gem.

Would travel: 20-30 Miles
Bottom line: I would play again

This course was once an absolute gem. They've had some problems, and the new owners are working hard to get it back. This summer was hell on the greens, and there are some trouble spots, but the course is a great layout, and with their new partner membership program, the course is dirt cheap. Now, all that said, several of the greens on the front side are half dead. I think they aerated twice in an effort to save them, and hopefully it will take hold. The fairways are in pretty good to very good condition, it's the tees and greens which are hurting. There are some excellent holes on this course, which is fairly short, but definitely a challenge. The clubhouse is pretty nice and they have a very helpful staff. There's also a PGA pro onsite, and he has a very good reputation.

Would travel: 10-20 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Ranks with the best in this price level, Bargain priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

Front 9 Greens and fairways ok, back 9 were in horrible condition, plus they let alot of singles go out alone. Way to pricey for the conditions, will not travel there to pay that much for those conditions again
